Sigalit Landau .|. Barbed Hula + Barbed Salt Lamps .|. 2001-07

A short clip documenting Sigalit Landau's performance video and hanging lamps as it was shown during elles@centrepompidou in 2009. "Barbed Hula" is from 2001 and "Barbed Salt Lamps" is from 2007. Landau's was one of many rotating pieces that was shown between May 27 2009 and February 21 2011 when "the Centre Pompidou's collections [were] entirely given over to women artists from the 20th century to the present day." I like the harshness of the materials— barbed wire and salt from the dead sea— mixed with of the deceptively decorative form of the rock candy like lamps. I also like that she took a childlike gesture of play— hula hooping on the beach— and made it an act of contrition and physical confinement.
